Saftu: Govt must register taxi owners as employers
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The South African Federation of Trade Unions and the Qina National Public Transport Workers Association want the government to register all taxi owners and associations as employers.
The two organisations have written to the Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi, demanding that taxi drivers, administrative and other staff within the taxi industry be formally recognised as employees of the various employers and associations.
“It is indisputable that taxi drivers, administrative staff, marshals, and other staff members in the taxi industry are employees, contracted by taxi owners and taxi associations, who assume the role of the employers,” said Saftu spokesperson on Wednesday.
“The Department of Employment and Labour must ensure that taxi drivers are not only registered but get all applicable statutory deductions such as unemployment insurance and skills levies. The department should liaise with the Department of Transport to ensure that the state subsidises all taxi operators as it does with bus operators.”
