SAFTU prepares for national public sector strike, rejects 3% wage hike offer
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has rejected the 3% wage offer for public servants.
The unions are demanding an 8% increase for teachers, police, traffic officers, correctional officers, nurses, social workers and all public servants – and are now preparign for national strike action.
The government offered 3% during the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council on Friday.
But the union says accepting a 3% increase on the baseline and a non-pensionable cash gratuity would mean that public service workers would have lost real increases to their wages and pensions for three consecutive years since 2020.
"Considering that this fiscal framework is planned for the next 3 years, public servants are still going to lose dearly in wages and pensions unless they fight back,” says spokesperson, Trevor Shaku.
“SAFTU is calling on the public service workers across all unions and federations to reject the government offer and begin a counter-offensive against the neoliberal onslaught," he says.
