SALGA to approach Zuma over Eskom debt
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The SA Local Government Association (SALGA) says they will approach President Jacob Zuma to assist in finding a solution in the Eskom debt situation.
SALGA says it wants to arrange a meeting with the president to ask that he step-in to resolve the problem which has led to Eskom threatening to switch off the lights for defaulting municipalities.
Eskom gave eight municipalities a week to make payments or debt repayment plans at the beginning of this month.
The utility says it's still in talks with four municipalities, the other four have started making payments.
The municipalities racked up a debt of over R10 billion.
SALGA's Sivuyile Mbambatho's says this was one of the key issues that were discussed at its National Executive Committee lekgotla - which wrapped up yesterday.
"These are the issues that need to be [addressed] at the highest political levels, because municipalities are finding themselves under immense pressure," says Mbambatho.
