Santaco: Taxi industry ‘miles’ from old, destructive ways
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has warned taxi operators not to take part in any destruction of property or public violence.

The taxi industry has been hailed for the role it has played in preventing shopping centres and malls from looters over the past few days.
More than 100 people have died and some 2000 people arrested in connection with the riots in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Santaco president Phillip Taaibosch spoke during a 'Defend Our Democracy' briefing on the violence and looting on Thursday.
"We have moved miles from the apartheid days where the taxi industry was continuously pushed back, and we are not going to allow anybody to push the taxi industry back anymore,” he said.
"We are also not going to allow that the gains we have made through the democratic processes in this country to be tarnished.
"We are calling upon on all taxi operators in South Africa not to allow them to be used by anyone in the destruction of order in this country."
