The official SA Police Service (SAPS) Twitter page stated : “#sapsGP 2 couples walking in Rhodes Park accosted by gang of 12 last night; men bound, thrown in dam & drowned, bodies retrieved by SAPS SD.”

Democratic Alliance Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom said earlier he had “established from a reliable source that a woman was raped and she and another woman were forced to watch as their husbands were tied up and drowned in the lake in Rhodes Park in Kensington, east Johannesburg”.

“This horrific incident occurred at about 7pm last night [Saturday].”

There appeared to have been 12 men involved who fled through a storm drain and had not yet been apprehended.

Divers searched for three hours in the night and found the two bodies of the men who had been tied up in their own clothes, he said.

“One man raped the woman while the others held her down. Their two companions were then tied up and thrown in the lake.”

Bloom said there had been other serious crime incidents in the park, and people should avoid the park after hours as security could not be assured.

The other woman reportedly managed to escape and police have launched a search for the 12 attackers.
