Scholar transport operators block major roads in Eastern Cape
Updated | By Algoa FM
Several roads in parts of the Eastern Cape were blocked by protesting scholar transport operators on Thursday morning.
The operators claim they have not been paid by the provincial government.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department said roads around Matatiele, Maluti and eMaxesibeni, formerly Mount Ayliff, have been closed, with trucks being used to enforce the blockade in some places.
Spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the R61 between Cofinvaba and Komani is also closed due to protest action.
He says only two district municipalities are being affected by protest action by scholar transport operators who say they have not been paid.
Meanwhile, the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Eastern Cape says its members are not taking part in any shutdown in the province.
Provincial coordinator Gabs Mtshala said they're not aware of the reasons for the action, nor were they part of any meeting where such a decision was taken.
In January, Santaco indicated that its members were owed millions in arrears.
