Scopa calls for lifestyle audits at police, Sita

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) has called for lifestyle audits at the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the State Information Technology Agency (Sita).

This follows allegations of corruption involving tenders at the two institutions.

Scopa chairperson Themba Godi says the audit should be conducted so that those with unexplained wealth can account.

"At SAPS there is a major-general whose house was renovated by money paid from a company that had a tender with SAPS.

"At Sita, a lady who's an administrator has farms, has companies, things that are way beyond her (salary)," says Godi.

Scopa is also concerned at possible collusion between Sita officials and convicted Boeremag member Andre du Toit.

"The committee is concerned about the collusion between Sita officials and the convicted Boeremag member Du Toit, which led to Sita officials giving financial and other assistance to Mr Du Toit while he was in prison," says Godi.

He says the committee has requested a report from National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole.

"We requested the National Commissioner to submit a report on all current investigations including the Forensic Data Analysts (FDA) and Unisys contracts by 31 May 2018.

"The committee has also told SAPS to expedite all investigations involving SAPS officials."
