To scrap or not to scrap e-tolls? SA could hear in February
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says an announcement on the final decision regarding e-tolls will be made in February.
While many are waiting for e-tolls to be scrapped, Mbalula said the announcement has been delayed because any decision will have financial implications.
He was briefing the media in Sandton on Friday.
The decision by the government will be announced by the Minister of Finance Enoch Gondongwana during his budget speech.
“Those financial implications need us to respond to them so that when we address one problem we do not open a hole on the other side.
“The people we are borrowing from said to us whether we scrap or do not scrap e-tolls, how they get their money is our decision. So we don’t have a bigger challenge in relation to us from the point of view of our lenders,” said Mbalula.
He said Treasury continues to look into the matter.
