The SRC claims protesting students and bystanders have been "beaten and sjambokked" by security, as a response to students who are protesting for their book and meal allowances.

Students are claiming that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has not deposited their money.

SRC President Thato Masekoa says more than 100 students have been injured since Wednesday due to beatings they suffered at the hands of security personnel.

"They beat girls brutally. They were mo*ring young and hungry the first and second years. Those were recorded on camera. The private security company even ran to students who were outside the premises of the university just to ensure that they injure those students. In fact, there are the ones who inflicted that violence as a result we have more comrades who are injured, now more than ever. "

The University says it is aware of allegations and has  vowed to look into the issue.

"That matter has been brought to the university's management and attention just a short while ago,” says spokesperson Dr Lusani Netshitomboni.

“We were looking at that and we are hoping that because we have cameras all around campus, once this has been brought to the management's attention  it will be investigated and appropriate steps will have to be taken."

The university's Vice Chancellor is expected to meet with the SRC students in an attempt to break the deadlock.

The students’ demands include the immediate lifting of the suspension imposed against three SRC members and that students must receive their full allowances.
