At least eight suspects, armed with shotguns and rifles, held the mall's security at gunpoint before forcing their way into a jewellery shop.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says a shootout ensued inside the mall around lunchtime before the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of jewellery.

"Police got information about the business robbery in progress and responded swiftly. As they were approaching the suspects they started shooting at the police and there was a shootout."

One person was hit by a stray bullet.

"During the shootout one of the guys that are pushing the trolleys outside the mall was hit by a bullet in the foot but was treated by paramedics right there," Masondo adds.

"There were no other injuries reported."

The suspects were able to flee the scene during the commotion.

"As they were outside the mall they hijacked a Toyota Corolla that was later found abandoned on Ellis Park. We have started with our search. We've launched a manhunt for the suspects who are still at large."

Police cordoned off the mall's entrance while they combed the scene for clues.
