The Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, has approved the release of the 2016 matric exam results but has indicated that not everyone would be receiving their results.

"Umalusi will not approve the release of the results of all the implicated learners, although investigations continue," says chairman John Volmink at a press briefing in Pretoria.

Volmink warns that action will also be taken against learners who were involved in group copying of the paper.

The leak was uncovered at a high school in Giyani.  At least 100 pupils in 10 Limpopo high schools were found to have accessed the exam paper before they were due to write.

An investigation by the Hawks led to the arrest of Tinyiko Khosa, the owner of private colleges in Malamulele.

But Umulasi says there is no need for a rewrite of the paper.

The Department of Basic Education says the affected learned have been informed that they will not be receiving their results until investigations have been completed.

"Hearings will commence in January and the investigation will be prioritised so the learners can have certainty as far as their results are concerned," the department's Elijah Mhlanga says.
