South Africa sheds 34 000 jobs

The jobs bloodbath continues in South Africa.
Statistics South Africa released its quarterly employment figures which show a decline of 34 000 jobs in the second quarter of 2017.
It says the manufacturing sector recorded the biggest decline.

Statistician-General Pali Lehohla released the figures in Pretoria on Thursday.
He says jobs declined by 0.4% quarter on quarter.
"We've got 9.6 million jobs in the formal and agricultural sector and a quarterly net decrease of 34 000 jobs."
Meanwhile, trade, mining and manufacturing showed a year-on-year increase, while construction saw a year-on-year decrease.
He says since 2015, there has been considerable job losses in the mining industry which has been driven by the coal and platinum sectors.
