‘Space cakes’ leaves 39 pupils in hospital
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Thirty-nine pupils from Lofentse Girls Secondary School in Soweto were hospitalised on Thursday after eating “space cakes”.
The cakes were allegedly sold by one of the pupils at the school.
The suspect has since been arrested and taken to a place of safety as she is a minor.
The Gauteng Department of Education's Steve Mabona says the 39 pupils were sent to Bheki Mlangeni and Chris Hani Baragwanath hospitals after vomiting and complaining of stomach pains.

"It is important to note that at the Chris Hani Baragwanath 29 learners were treated and 11 have remained at the hospital. The total number of learners who are under observation at the hospital as of today is 12," Mabona adds.
