Nurse Wisani Mboweni, who works at the health facility in the west of Pretoria, has been nursing hundreds for the past 11 years.

Mboweni says when the virus reached our shores about 22 months ago, she was selected as a frontline worker.

The 39-year-old has chronicled dealing with death during the pandemic, detailing sleepless nights and sadness for those who have lost the battle.

“You want to save the life of the person, but the person ends up dying in front of you – it is very difficult and to deal with it afterward," Mboweni says.

"We feel so frustrated. It’s very stressful. We are trying to save lives while people are losing their lives. The pandemic is here, it’s taking their lives.”

Mboweni, who has received her Johnson & Johnson booster dose, has chosen vaccinating as her inspiration for continuing the fight against the health crisis in 2022.

She has laid bare her first-hand experience that vaccines do work.

“What motivate me is that people are being vaccinated, this thing is getting much better now."

"We don’t have that overflows in the ward, so it’s getting better.

"Even after I got the vaccination, I’m not that sick and not getting sick. It shows that the vaccine is working.”
