The Springs couple, who can't be identified to protect the identities of their five children, face 22 charges combined - including rape and attempted murder.

Earlier this year a police officer, social worker and nurse testified of the state in which they found the children as well as the house.

Police found pornographic material and sex toys in the house while the children were found to have been deprived of health care and decent living conditions.

So far the case has been centred around the couple's then 11-year-old son who fled to the neighbours to ask for help.

He was later found by police with both eyes swollen and bruises on his face.

The man was arrested in 2014 after his 11-year-old son sounded the alarm that he and his four siblings were being kept in a basement in the so-called 'house of horrors'.

The couple, who can't be named to protect the identities of their children, face 21 charges relating to abuse, rape and the possession and dealing in drugs.
