State capture pushback only just begun, says McBride

The head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) Robert McBride believes the pushback from those involved in state capture and corruption has only just begun.

McBride was speaking at the launch of Ipid's new logo in Pretoria on Tuesday.

"We should be glad at the fact that there are many people who are resisting. It's not the beginning of the end, it is only the end of the beginning. It just started, there will be lots of pushbacks and we are just getting into terms with it."

On Tuesday Ipid confirmed the arrest of four senior police officials and a service provider for fraud amounting to R84 million.

The three generals and a brigadier were arrested in connection with procurement irregularities involving blue lights.

McBride said while a lot of corruption and state capture remain hidden, Ipid has the evidence to expose the officials.

"Some of it we will never understand and we will never know it because it is hidden. But Ipid has evidence of a conspiracy, a lot of individual cliques of corruption and state capture does not necessarily prove a conspiracy, but IPID has evidence, we are able to see the links, we are able to see the appointment of people for purposes of carrying out nefarious activities."

He said in the coming days, Ipid will make its findings public.

"It gives us no happiness, no happiness, to arrest one of our colleagues from the SAPS or metro police. It's actually a sad affair to arrest in essence one of your own or to bring them to court but its necessary. We are having success in the coming days the news will be full of the successes as we bring cases to completion and present them to the NPA and they decide whether to prosecute or not."

McBride said the completed investigations don't only focus on corruption, but also on police brutality.

He said in a period of three months, three people reported to have been tortured including an alleged murder of a person in police custody in KwaZulu-Natal.
