State Security hits out at Malema

South Africa's law enforcement agencies were actively pursuing criminal charges against Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema for his comments on Al-Jazeera that opposition parties would remove the government through "the barrel of a gun", State Security Minister David Mahlobo said on Tuesday.

Condemning Malema's remarks during a media briefing following his tabling of his budget vote in Parliament, Mahlobo said: "We must note that everybody has a right to express himself as provided for in the Constitution, but these rights have a limitation. There is a contravention of the law of this country."

The Minister said Malema's comments were akin to "propagation of war" and warranted an investigation.

"While there is a complaint made by the ANC, the law enforcement agencies must deal with it and let's allow them to deal with that particular incident," he said.

"There are these among us who are reckless, who are not fit to be in a position to lead the nation…whose statements must be condemned by South Africans…"

At the same time, Mahlobo also lashed out at NGOs who were helping foreign agencies "destabilise" South Africa.

"Some of the NGO's they can't explain where their funding where does it come from, who are their directors. Well some of them can't explain for a non-governmental organisation working in a democratic dispensation, why do they have the equipment we don't even have," he said.
