Steenhuisen urges farmers to use Agro-Energy Fund
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has encouraged farmers to make use of the Agro-Energy Fund to diversify energy sources.
The Agro-Energy Fund is a blended finance instrument developed in partnership with the land bank to support all qualifying producers and agro-processors with alternative energy sources.
Speaking in parliament on the Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development budget, Steenhuisen said the department will continue to offer support grants to farmers who cannot afford loans.
"The support includes the provision of on and off-the-farm infrastructure, production inputs, mechanisation, training and mentorship, extension support and ensuring that smallholder producers receive accreditation and certification from supplying safe and high-quality food to the market and the public.
“Additionally, R448 million will be made available to support 67,492 vulnerable households with food production and to create 9,461 jobs.”
