Striking ANC staff hit back at top structures over ‘empty promises’

The African National Congress (ANC) had its hands full this week with a myriad of problems including a failure to submit candidate lists for the October local before the deadline on Wednesday.

The governing party was also forced to close its offices nationwide on Thursday when disgruntled staff vowed to bring operations to a standstill over unpaid salaries.

The party says it has been unable to pay staffers for July and August due to cash-flow problems.

ANC staff chairperson Mvusi Mdala called a media briefing on Friday where he lambasted the party for creating a narrative that the industrial strike action by staffers is politically-motivated.

“We are extremely appalled by the attitude the employer following our decision to embark on an indefinite industrial action.

“We want to set the record straight, our decision to down tools is the last resort fulling a series of attempts to work jointly with the employer in finding solutions to the challenges faced by the staff members,” Mdala added.

“Throughout the process, the employer has been making empty promises and selling the employees false hopes. This adversely affects livelihoods and we therefore have no other option but to resort to extreme measures our beloved movement.”

According to Mdala, even the top ranks at Luthuli House are affected by non-payment of salaries.

The governing party has previously been frank about its financial woes but denied it was entirely broke.

Mdala believes the Party Funding Act only added to already existing woes.

He called on the party’s top structures to engage with staff on a way forward.
