Suspect shot and killed during attempted ATM bombing
An alleged robber was shot and killed in a shootout with security guards at the shopping centre in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga this morning.
Police say it is alleged that a group of robbers armed with rifles stormed the area where close to 100 senior citizens gathered to receive their grants.
Police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says one security guard and a robber got involved in a struggle.
"During the process, the security guards and the robbers exchanged gun fire in which one robber was shot dead," says Hlathi.
Hlathi says a detonator was found already fitted in one of the teller machines.
"The other suspects escaped the scene in three vehicles, two white Mercedes Benz and a silver grey Audi. The registration numbers unknown," says Hlathi.
