Suspected loan sharks nabbed with SASSA cards in Sebokeng

Two suspected loan sharks have been arrested in Sebokeng after they were found in possession of cash and more than 200 cards from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

The two were arrested after they were spotted at an ATM machine at Thabong Mall passing through the cards to get cash out.


 


They were seen by community patrollers from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, who alerted the police.


 


"The suspects are currently detained at the Sebokeng police station while investigation continues,” says the department’s Ofentse Morwane.  


 


“Gauteng community safety has deployed over 3000 community patrollers to assist during the Covid-19 lockdown to ensure compliance with the regulations and adherence to the Disaster Management Act.”


 


He says the community patrollers have been deployed to keep the beneficiaries safe at the various shopping malls.


 


"The patrollers are also deployed in identified crime hot-spots across the province. Before they could commence with work, they were screened for possible Covid-19 infections, furnished with essential services permits, sanitisers and face masks.”
