Suspects nabbed for copper theft in Roodepoort
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The City of Johannesburg and the Hawks have arrested three suspects for copper theft and bribery at Roodepoort Recycling, west of Johannesburg.
Spokesperson in the office of Mayor Herman Mashaba, Chantelle Fourie-Shawe, says the forensic team received a tip-off that a truck was loading suspected stolen copper cable.
"The authorities raided the scrapyard and found a truck loading suspected stolen copper with an estimated street value of R500 000."
The driver of the truck was arrested after eight tons of the copper was found on the premises.
"The owner of the scrapyard where the copper was found was also arrested for attempting to bribe law enforcement officers with R50 000. The owner was previously convicted for copper theft and yet another case of copper theft is currently pending against him,” says Fourie-Shawe.
The suspects are expected to appear at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court for a bail application soon.
