Tax filing season: SARS warns of scams doing the rounds

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has fined consultancy Gartner $2.44 million (R50 million) for its role in state capture linked to the SA Revenue Service (SARS).

Tax filing season starts on Friday.

SARS says it has noted email scams where members of the public are randomly sent fraudulent emails made to look like they are sent from SARS.

The fraudulent emails aim to lure unsuspecting taxpayers into giving away personal information like their bank account details.

Some emails have links to false forms and fake websites for people to enter personal information that will then be used to commit fraud.

In a statement, SARS urges taxpayers not to click on the links and instead delete the emails.

The revenue service has reported more than 300 scams using its name.
