Tempers flare as government, community meet over protests

Tempers flared at the University of Johannesburg yesterday as Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu met with community leaders following last week's housing and service delivery protests in the south of Johannesburg.

Sisulu and her delegation - which included MEC Paul Mashatile and Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba - had their hands full as angry residents demanded answers on the lack of progress after more than 20 years of democracy.

The meeting started more than an hour late, with community leaders threatening to leave.

Sisulu was eventually allowed to address residents, asking for cooperation.

"Treat this meeting with respect. We know you have been angry. We are here now to listen to you," said Sisulu.

Mashatile explained they are busy with databases for those who qualify for houses and this should be done in a few weeks' time.

"We are here today so that the minister can hear your issues, but we have already started working. Our teams are working and they will continue to work," said Mashatile.

Residents of Ennerdale, Eldorado Park, Lawley and Orange Farm all took to the streets to protest last week.
