Three firefighters killed in Joburg blaze

Three firefighters have died while battling a  fire that erupted at provincial government building on Wednesday.

MEC for infrastructure development Jacob Mamabolo confirmed the death toll at an impromptu media briefing on Wednesday afternoon.


“This has just been updated that there are currently three members of the City of Joburg fire department, the firefighters who have lost their lives. We would like to convey our sincere condolences to the deceased and their families,” he said.  


Eight other firefighters were taken to hospital.


This as questions are being asked about the state of the building housing the offices of the department of health.


Mamabolo confirmed that the building’s compliance levels sits at 21%.

“The building was not compliant with the basic regulation sand the laws of this country on safety and health. It actually says the building was about 21% was the level of compliance, the building should be at 85%.”


The Johannesburg Emergency Services confirmed that they were still in the process of retrieving the two bodies on Wednesday afternoon.
