Treasury support helped Eskom ramp up maintenance, says Ramokgopa

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says the money allocated to Eskom by National Treasury has made it possible for the utility to ramp up much-needed maintenance.

Ramokgopa briefed the media on Monday on the implementation of the government’s Energy Action Plan, which is meant to rid the country of load shedding.
Ramokgopa said the money given to Eskom has allowed it to ramp up maintenance to 9,000MW between December 2023 and January 2024.
He said this was about 6,000MW more than the planned maintenance done during the winter period.
“During the winter period of 2023, planned maintenance averaged at about 3000MW. So, it added another 6000MW on the back of the support we received from National Treasury.
“As a result of that, we took out 18% of the generation capacity, and it was placed on planned maintenance to allow us the opportunity to return healthier and more efficient units.”
The country is on rotational stage 3 and 2 load shedding until further notice.
