The embattled power utility has threatened to disconnect electricity in Tshwane over its R1.6 billion unpaid debt.

Eskom says the city only paid R68 million at the end of August, which "did little to dent the massive outstanding balance on its electricity account”.

The city's MMC for Finance Peter Sutton says the city is committed to settling the full amount by 16 September.

He was speaking at a media briefing on Monday to announce Johan Mettler as the new city manager.

The city has not had a permanent city manager for over three years.

"As it stands today we have R1 billion outstanding debt to Eskom, we committed to payment plans which Eskom did not accept but we still commit to that and we make daily payments. we are planning to pay R590 million by the end of this week and to settle the full amount on the 16th of September.

“As our collection is received and we can make more payments to them, the team will do that. So we will pay no later than the 16 of September or earlier as the cash allows," says Sutton.
