ICYMI: Tshwane on high alert amid cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
Tshwane's MMC for Health Marina Marx says measures have been put in place to ensure a speedy response to possible cholera cases in the city.
The National Health Department on Wednesday issued an advisory calling for caution in South Africa amid the ongoing cholera outbreak in neighbouring country, Zimbabwe.
This as the cross-border travel is expected to increase due to the festive season, making the country prone to the outbreak.
Earlier this year the city recorded over 40 deaths caused by cholera.
To this day, the source of the cholera outbreak in Hamanskraal is still not known.
Marx has called on Tshwane residents to be vigilant.
"If you are unsure about the quality of water, boil water before use. Wash fruit, vegetables and meat using water that has been boiled. Good hand hygiene is important to prevent the spread of cholera.
"Though the department’s efforts remain focused on preventative measures, our outbreak response teams are ready should they be required. Cholera is highly preventable and treatable if detected early."
