Tuks student leaders beg on the streets

Students from the University of Pretoria are begging on the streets to raise money for students in need.
This forms part of the 2017 Temporary Student Committee's launch of the fundraising campaign to raise R10 million for more than 100 students who need financial assistance to pay their historical debt so they can register and continue with their studies.
Deputy Student Representative Council (SRC) President Thabo Shingange says they have come to realise that the so-called missing middle are experiencing a lot of problems.
"With the limited budget that we have, we realised that we are not going to be in a position to assist a lot of students and, therefore, we decided to take it to the streets to mobilise the broader community towards assisting, particularly, the missing middle category, who are in charge of their own historical debts and their own funding," says Shingange.
Shingange says they also want to create awareness.
"In the context of South Africa, we have realised that one needs to live in poverty in order to receive assistance. This falls within the broader context to say that the students might not be here themselves begging for money, but the representative council is demonstrating the realities that need to take place in order for us to create awareness of the funding crisis," says Shingange.
