Two people have been shot dead in a shootout between two gangs in Westbury and Newclare.
The police say six separate shooting incidents were reported in the area since Friday night.
Sophiatown police station commander, Alfred Ndebele confirmed to the media on Monday that the shooting incidents are related to gangs.
Ndebele says the sale of drugs also plays a significant role in the unrest in the community.
Eleven other people were left with injuries.
Provincial police commissioner Elias Mawela says resources have been mobilised to the area.
"The police are following up on any information received and one suspect has since been arrested for a case of attempted murder,” says Mawela.
“A plea is made to the community of Westbury and surrounding areas to please work together with the police in ensuring that the perpetrators are arrested," he adds.
