Two people died and a number of others were injured on Wednesday in a multiple vehicle crash involving four trucks, 12 cars, and a taxi on the N4 outside Pretoria, Tshwane emergency services said.
"The accident was caused by a grass fire. The smoke crossed the road and people did not slow down, causing the pile-up," spokesman Johan Pieterse said.
"Two people died, one person is critical, and there are a number of serious patients," he said.
Paramedics were still on the scene at 2pm and were unsure about the number of people injured.
The N4 was closed between the De Wildt and Ga-Rankuwa off ramps, direction west to Rustenburg.
"We will still be on the scene for another two hours," he said.
