Two shot in Centurion ‘wanted for spate of hijackings’

The two suspects killed during a shootout with police in Centurion were wanted for a spate of hijackings across Gauteng.

The pair was shot dead and four others left critically injured following a shootout in Hennops Park on Thursday. 


According to provincial police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters, the suspects were spotted in Centurion and police gave chase. 


“Police intercepted the suspects' vehicle and the suspects allegedly started firing shots at the police who then returned fire. 


“Police on the crime scene seized two rifles and a pistol, as well as the suspect's vehicle which has since been confirmed as having been hijacked in Honeydew, Johannesburg in July this year.”

Details are still sketchy but it's understood a shootout ensued between police officers and several suspects on Jacaranda Street. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says paramedics arrived on the scene to find the police already in attendance. "On closer inspection, medics found two male suspects lying inside a light motor vehicle while two others were found lying outside the car.

Two officers were among those injured and were airlifted to a nearby hospital. 


The remaining two suspects were also taken to hospital under police guard. 


“The suspects will be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of hijacked vehicle. More charges may be added pending further investigation.


“Gauteng Commissioner of Police Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the relentless efforts of the investigating team that continues to work hard on decreasing the volumes of hijackings where often victims are violently injured or killed.”
