Police in Zimbabwe are investigating two cases of the contravention of that country’s Electoral Act.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (ZEC) Priscilla Chigumba said two presidential candidates have been accused of election irregularities.

The ZEC gave an update on the voting processes on Monday afternoon in Harare.

Chigumba says law enforcement are investigating the possible flouting of electoral laws after two candidates allegedly contravened the rule which states that no campaigning may take place 24 hours before polling stations open.

“On 29 July 2018 at least two of the presidential candidates gave statements which were published in the news media which might be interpreted as campaigning. These matters have been referred to the attention of the police for investigation as to whether or not the Electoral Act and/or Electoral Code of Conduct was violated.”

ZANU-PF's incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa accused former President Robert Mugabe of striking a deal with his main opposition, MDC leader Nelson Chamisa in a video statement.

Mnangagwa responded to a press briefing given by Mugabe on Sunday  - in which he stated that he would not support ZANU-PF in the presidential elections.

Earlier on Monday, Chamisa confirmed that police are questioning him.

“They don’t know the law, they are very wrong on the law and I am not interested they are just perpetuating their bias,” said Chamisa.

Chingumba did not want to confirm the identities of those under investigations, saying “today is polling day, we need peace and everyone to be comfortable to go out and exercise their right to vote without fear.”
