UFS reacts to rugby clash
The University of the Free State on Tuesday said they would do everything in their power to apprehend those involved in the violence at the Varsity Cup rugby game in Bloemfontein.
The university's main campus in Bloemfontein will remain closed on Wednesday after classes were suspended today.
UFS Rector and Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Jansen said while the protest action at the rugby game was illegal, it did no harm to the physical well-being of the spectators.
"The reaction from the group of spectators, however, not only opened old wounds, it trampled - literally and figuratively - on the dignity and humanity of other human beings. This we condemn in no uncertain terms," Jansen said during a press briefing at the university.
Meanwhile, classes remain suspended at the University of Pretoria following clashes on campus yesterday over the language policy.
The ANC's Zizi Kodwa called on the management of universities to work together with student movements to restore peace and stability on campus.
"Racial wars and racial tensions do not in any way bring us closer to the type of society we need to collectively build together," Kodwa said.
