Tensions once again mounted on Monday morning.

Afriforum's Jaco Grobler said the tense stand-off was between his organisation and supporters of other student movements, demanding that Arikaans be scrapped as language at the University.

"All of the other students on campus are trying to protect the campus because they are going to break everything... they are going to raid it, and we are trying to protect it now," Grobler said.

Leader of the #UPrising movement, Mthokozisi Lukhele called it ironic when asked about AfriForum claiming they are trying to protect the university while other students are trying to trash it.

"We need to ask what they are really protecting. Are they protecting the university or are they protecting Afrikaans?" he asked.

Lukhele said if they are protecting the issue that Afrikaans should stay at the university, it causes a problem because it raises questions of white supremacy and privilege "and that's what we need to get rid of".

He believed getting rid of language policies at the university would get rid of many issues like racism.

When asked if any of their supporters have been violent, he said "no, I think we have maintained order and discipline within their [protest action]".

"The stance is clear, we want English as one medium...We don't want any other languages, we just want English all the way," Lukhele said.

This comes after 27 students were arrested on Friday. They appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court and the case was postponed until 7 April.
