WATCH: Tear gas, rubber bullets fired at UP protest
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Tensions ran high in the streets around the University of Pretoria on Friday, where the police fired rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas at protesting students.
The gates to the Hatfield and Groenkloof campuses remain locked, but students have ignored an interdict and were at the main campus to protest against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.
Acting Student Representative Council President Thabo Shigange said the situation was getting out of hand.
"We have as an SRC formulated a sub structure of different leaders to find a working solution," he said.
Shigange said they all agree that the language policy should indicate that English is the medium of instruction.
"The SRC would like to state categorically that we do not condone any form of violence. However, we are requesting the management of the university to come out and engage students peacefully," Shingange said.
Several students have been arrested.
