UKZN to produce Covid-19 test results within 6 hours
Updated | By ECR
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) can now produce test results for coronavirus within six hours.
This is thanks to an advanced instrument called the ILEX Genehecker which was donated to the institution by Gift of the Givers.
UKZN researcher Professor Anil Chuturgoon says the instrument will help achieve results much sooner for both the university's staff and students.
"It can be used as a point of care instruments, you get a diagnosis and isolate the person who has tested positive and do tracing to see who they were in contact with.
“We are preparing to see that students are gonna be safe at all times on campus as we don't have any unlimited resources to deal with the outbreak at the university," says Chuturgoon.
He adds that the testing facility will also be extended to external stakeholders bringing in a much-needed stream of income for the university.
Students began returning to campuses this week.
