Khayelihle Nzimande, the University of KwaZulu-Natal student accused of killing a fellow student, has been deemed temporarily unfit to stand trial.
Nzimande appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates Court on Monday.
The prosecutor told the court that a mental assessment by the district surgeon recommended Nzimande be put under psychiatric evaluation for 30 days.
Two weeks ago police found the burnt remains of Samkelo Zondi - a fourth-year BCom student - on the varsity's Westville campus.

Zondi was reported missing by UKZN's Risk Management Services.
Nzimande was allegedly caught while burning the body in the bushes.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KZN Natasha Kara says the matter has been postponed pending the psych evaluation.
"The accused appeared at the Pinetown Magistrates Court and the matter was postponed this is to allow the state to make arrangements for the psychiatric evaluation of the accused."
He is expected back in court on November 5.
