For the first time since the advent of democracy in 1994, the ANC has lost its absolute majority in parliament and was left scrambling to find coalition partners to remain in power.

It has since agreed to form what it calls a national unity government with several other parties.

They include the DA, the Inkatha Freedom Party, the anti-immigration Patriotic Alliance and the small centre-left GOOD party.

The inauguration marks the start of Ramaphosa's five-year term of office.

The president-elect, members of Parliament, dignitaries, foreign Heads of State, other guests, and members of the public are expected to attend the event.

Attendees will also enjoy an array of cultural and artistic performances by various artists, including Makhazi and Sjava.

WATCH:

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will swear in the president-elect, who will promise to uphold the constitution and the laws of the land.

The government has also set up public viewing sites across nine provinces.

To date, 18 heads of state and government, three former heads of state and government and nine heads of delegation are expected to attend.

Roads around the Union Buildings, Sunnyside, and Hatfield have been closed to ensure a secure and smooth event.

At Rietondale Park, a heavy convoy of guests, government officials, and media personnel are gathering to board shuttle buses to the Union Buildings.

Upon arrival, guests receive a bag containing refreshments including water, coffee, fruit, and breakfast sandwiches.

Security is tight, with all guests being thoroughly searched and accreditation cards verified before being granted access.

Members of the public who will witness the ceremony from the south lawns of the Union Buildings, are also shuttled to the area in buses, and these are escorted by police.
