Unique honour for Simon’s Town penguins
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Picturesque Simon’s Town is celebrating its most famous residents - the penguins
- by changing zebra crossing to a “penguin crossing”.

The initiative began when the Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, addressed the Simon’s Town Business Council where he encouraged them to increase their tourism potential by highlighting the town’s uniqueness.
One of the things that make Simon’s Town special is the fact that it is home to Boulder’s Beach - which is home to the endangered African Penguin.
The department’s Bianca Capazorio says the business council took the idea and ran with it.

"They have painted the most adorable little penguins on their pedestrians crossing in their town.
The result is a series of African Penguins appearing to waddle across the town’s pedestrian crossings, which happen to perfectly match their famous tuxedos.”
Capazorio says the Winde is happy that the council used the idea.
"This is the kind of thing that makes for great holiday photos that can then be shared on social media, raising the profile of Simons Town, around the world.”
