Unisa gates close following protest action

The University of South Africa (Unisa) suspended its registration after protests broke out at its Sunnyside campus on Friday.

The Economic Freedom Fighter Student Command (EFFSC) is picketing outside the Sunnyside campus, demanding that the university allow walk-in late applicants and not charge an application fee.
The EFFSC's Itumeleng Molefe says they will protest until their demands are met.
Unisa officials and registered students were blocked from entering the campus.
Molefe says they will not allow anyone to enter until Unisa allows walk-in applications.

Unisa spokesperson, Marin Ramotshela, confirmed that the Sunnyside campus was closed in the interest of safety.
"Registration has been suspended because staff was sent home. There is apparently a memorandum with a set of demands by the EFF. Among which is the issue around acceptance of late applications and no registration fee. Management is engaging with these students."
