Vaal Dam level reaches two year high
Updated | By Suné du Toit
The Department of Water and Sanitation says the rain over the last few days have allowed the Vaal Dam to reach its highest level in almost two years.
The department's Sputnik Ratau says the Vaal Dam level is currently standing at 81.6 percent, while the integrated Vaal River System stands at about 75 percent.
"This is something quite remarkable and we are hopeful that we will still see more rain, but we are also very grateful for the rain that has come thus far," says Ratau.
The Vaal Dam level stood at 61 percent on 17 January.
Southern Africa has been battling a prolonged drought, with water restrictions implemented in several provinces.
Ratau says the Gariep Dam level currently stands at about 76 percent.
He says most dams in the North West, one of the worst hit provinces, are at full capacity - with the exception of Klein-Maricopoort Dam and Molatedi Dam.
