Virologist warns of another Covid-19 wave to hit SA
Virologist Professor Barry Schoub has urged South Africans to prepare for another Covid-19 wave.
Schoub says the country is just weeks away from a sixth wave of infections.
He warns the new Covid-19 peak is expected in September or October.
“Covid do come in waves, and they come every three months or so. So, we can expect to have another wave. Maybe at the end of next month or in October. Hopefully it will be a lot milder than what we’ve had in our first couple of waves. The fifth wave was also quiet mild.”
Schoub has urged South Africans to get vaccinated, as it remains best form of protection against the deadly virus.

“We can afford to drop some of the restrictions but it’s still important that people get vaccinated because Covid is not over yet. We will have periodic upswings of infections.”
South Africa, even though it is the hardest-hit country in Africa, still lags behind in vaccinations.
Under 40% of its citizens have been fully vaccinated against the virus, which has killed over 1 million people worldwide.
