The community took to the streets this morning to protest against the appointment of a black principle at Klipspruit West Secondary School.

The feel the correct process was not followed in appointing the principle.

But the department's spokesperson Steve Mabona says the process is still unfolding.

"The community raised concerns over procedures used to appoint a principal. We have asked them to give us an opportunity to go and verify the paperwork so we can pronounce on the way forward," says Mabona.

Mabona has also criticised attempts by teachers to embark on a go-slow.

"The community says we should follow procedures but now they have been conducting their own communication saying they want to destabilise schooling."

A coloured rights group Patriots for Equality disputes claims by the department that it has been engaging with the community.

Representative Charis Pretorius maintains the process used to select the school principal was extremely flawed.

"There was no process of (training) the School Governing Body (SGB), the SGB has been dysfunctional at that school", says Pretorius.

Pretorius says this has caused them to take it upon themselves to try and resolve the situation at the school.

Gauteng police says officers ate monitoring the protest after a Putco bus was torched by the community.

Protesters also blocked roads with stones and burning tyres.
