Mswane arrived back at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, saying the divisiveness which dogged her participation had left her in an emotional state.
Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane says she received death threats for taking part in the Miss Universe pageant in Israel.
Mswane finished second runner-up in the prestigious event.
Her participation in the pageant has been shrouded in controversy, with pro-Palestinian groups calling on her to boycott the event.
The South African government also withdrew its support for her participation.
Mswane arrived back at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, saying the divisiveness which dogged her participation had left her in an emotional state.
“I think this is the most difficult decision, I sometimes I wonder if going to Israel was a great choice just because when I make that decision it was no longer about me but the safety of my family and those I love, and to receive death threats to not being able to sleep.
"I don’t think I have prepared for this competition, so for me being in third place is the biggest win I could achieve, and I am extremely proud of myself,” said Mswane.
“I always knew that being Miss South Africa was not going to be smooth sailing and I did not expect a baptism of fire. I was hoping for the best but also expecting any bad thing that can happen to me. My decision was to represent South Africa.”
A small group of pro-Palestinian activists waving Palestine flags demonstrated at the airport alongside a crowd waving South African flags to welcome Mswane.
