WATCH: Tuks student killed during armed robbery

The incident on Grosvenor Street in Hatfield was captured on CCTV footage early on Saturday morning.

The B Comm Hon Internal Auditing student, whose name has been withheld by the institution, can be seen crossing the street alone when suddenly a gunman approached him.

The assailant then pulled the trigger and later took valuables from the victim before fleeing on foot.

He was declared dead on the scene by paramedics

The institution's Director for the Department of Institutional Advancement Rikus Delport says the suspect was later arrested.

"The suspect tried to flee but was quickly apprehended by the police, who worked closely with UP Campus Security and members of the Hatfield City Improvement District, who were immediately on the scene.

"The University reminds students again to make use of the Green Route, which is an initiative launched by the University in its attempt to provide and maintain a secure work and study environment for students and personnel members.

"The route makes specific provisions for students and personnel members to be accompanied to and from their residences and vehicles or any nearby places. Security officers accompany students and personnel members from 18:00 to 06:00. Any security officer can be approached and a request can be made for an escort,” says Delport.
