Water supply still not fully restored in Joburg

Douglasdale residents are still without running water after a major water pipe burst in Johannesburg.

A major leak was detected on Wednesday.

The damaged water pipe is 35 metres underground on an unstable landfill. Repairs to this pipe have been completed.

However, a further leak has been detected in Douglasdale.

The Johannesburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure, Nico de Jager, says the water supply has been partially restored in most of the affected areas.

"Douglasdale is still out. When we started with the recharging of the Douglasdale reticulation system, we encountered a burst. That is to be expected. It is very old infrastructure that should have been replaced a long time ago," de Jager says.

The pipe burst will have to be repaired before the water supply can be fully restored.

Residents of Sandton, Bryanston, Woodmead, Morningside, Alexander and Libro Park and surrounding areas were without water as a result of the initial pipe burst.

De Jager says they are providing regular updates on Twitter.

Meanwhile, water tanks have apparently been stolen.

The tanks were situated at strategic locations for residents' convenience.

Joburg Water spokesperson Isaac Dhludhlu says two tanks are unaccounted for.

"They may have been removed illegally or borrowed illegally. We are not saying they were stolen."

He says the unaccounted tanks were placed in Alexandra.
