‘We are being forced to vote like cows’ – Makhubele slams DA in Joburg
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
City of Johannesburg Council Chair of Chairs Colleen Makhubele has accused the DA of running the city through bullying and intimidation.
Cope’s Makhubele is one of three councillors from at least three parties, who are part of the DA-led coalition, who voted in favour of the no-confidence motion in Speaker Vasco da Gama.
The different parties have vowed to take action against the rogue councillors, while the DA claims there was bribery involved.
Makhubele, who claims to be the acting speaker following Da Gama’s removal, told a media briefing on Monday that the DA is threatening legal action against anyone who refuses to toe the line.
"We are being forced to vote like cows.
"Now that they have finished taking our land, the next thing is to take our cheap black votes through this coalition using our party leaders to intimidate us councillors."
Meanwhile, Al-Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad says they are going to remove Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse.
"There is no party that will govern in the absence of the other party because all of us are below the threshold, so there is constant lobbying.
"We are still going to lobby, including the minorities which are within the government, to make it a point that we are going to remove Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse.”
