‘We are ready’, say Class of 2024 ahead of final exams
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that everything is in place for the 2024 matric final exams, which will start with Afrikaans and English Paper 3 on Monday.
A total of 732,000 full-time and 136,000 part-time candidates will take the exams at approximately 7,000 examination centres nationwide.
The exams will conclude on 28 November for both Independent Examinations Board and National Senior Certificate pupils.
Jacaranda FM News caught up with the soon-to-be graduates as they set to embark on their final high school stretch.
Pretty Sola, an 18-year-old student from Joe Slovo Comprehensive and Technical High School in Khayelitsha, expressed confidence that her hard work will allow her to pursue a career in Radiology.
“I have thoroughly studied, I have an exam study schedule, I attend Saturday classes, I’m part of a study group with my peers, and I have mentors and tutors to assist me. I see myself as a successful person because I’m a go-getter. I’m not a failure,” Sola said.
Despite feeling overwhelmed, Thamisanqa Mahlangu (19), a Grade 12 learner at Finetown Secondary School, is confident that his hard work will translate into positive results.
“I have to remain faithful and keep on praying because there are those who came after me, and they performed well. That on its own serves as a motivator.”
A stressed Viwe Mbuke (18) from Sinenjongo High School said she does not cope well with pressure.
“As we are getting closer to the exams, my anxiety remains high. However, my dream of going to university keeps me alive. I plan on enrolling at an institution that is not in Gauteng because I feel like being far away from home will instil some sense of independence, even though it comes with its own set of challenges.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane embarked on the pledge signing campaign this week, urging matriculants to follow the exam rules and report any contraventions.
