Tributes are pouring in following the news that renowned former top cop Piet Byleveld has passed away in a hospital in Roodepoort.
Byleveld lost his battle with cancer at the age of 67.
In a statement, his family says Byleveld signed off on his final case.
"Piet was surrounded by his closest family at the time of passing. To South Africa and the world Piet was the top cop.
To us he was more; he was the best husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed," says his family.
Retired top detective Bushie Engelbrecht worked closely with Byleveld in the 1990s and says he is one of the better policemen the country has seen.
"He was well-respected and I'm sure that the South African Police Service and everyone who worked with him will miss him dearly," says Engelbrecht.
